Our Story
The year 1969 was a landmark moment for Shetland’s maritime industry when three skilled engineers—Hugh Hughson, David Nicolson, and John Pottinger—came together to establish a shore-based marine engineering service. Recognizing the growing need for reliable repair and maintenance support, particularly for Shetland’s fishing fleet and visiting vessels, they formed HNP Engineers (Lerwick) Ltd.
At the time, Lerwick was a bustling port, with inshore fishing boats, UK and Scandinavian trawlers, and even vessels from as far as France, Holland, and Russia regularly calling in for essential engineering support. The expertise and dedication of HNP’s founders quickly established the company as a trusted provider of marine repair and servicing solutions.
Today, over 50 years later, their vision and commitment live on, with HNP Engineers still leading the way in marine engineering under the ownership of Managing Director Ian Walterson.
